In this tutorial I will explain how to set up a self hosted wordpress blog. By following these steps you will rank better in the search engines and have more control, such as plugins and appearance. The first step is to register  a domain name. Make sure you do your keyword research first so you know what your niche phrase is going to be. It is important to only buy a domain name that ends with a .com,org or net. This will ensure that you will rank better in the search engines and gain the most traffic possible. If that is also  taken you can add an extra word such as blog or website to the end of your niche phrase.

The first step is to buy your domain name and set up your web hosting. For this you can use hostgator. I highly recommend hostgator and I have all my blogs hosted with them, they also have great support if you need it. The best option for a plan is the baby plan as you are allowed unlimited domains.Click order now.

On the next page  you will have two options. Choose the option  register a new domain name and enter your chosen domain name and extension and continue to step 2.

You can now review your order and purchase. You will then be asked if you are a new customer, next you will need to set up a account with hostgator and choose a username and password. Write your details down so you don’t forget.The next step is to install wordpress. Log in to your hostgator cpanel from the link from the email that was sent to you. Then click on the fantastico image.

On the next page click on wordpress under the blogs heading. Then click on new installation. You will then need to choose your domain from the drop down menu, choose a administrator username, password, nickname, email address, site name and description. Once all of these fields are completed click on install wordpress. On the next page just click on finish installation and if you want to you can have your details sent to your email address. Congratulations who have just set up your own self hosted wordpress blog.

The next step is to log in to your wordpress dashboard and set up your settings. Go to each section listed.

General Tab Under Settings.

Fill in your blog title and tag line, then fill in your wordpress address and site address.These two should be the same with the www  included.Then enter a email address you check regularly.For membership it should be unchecked for anyone can register and new user default role should be set to subscriber. The rest can be done to your preferences or left as it is and then click on save changes.

Writing Settings.

For this leave everything they way it is and scroll down to where there is a box to add ping sites, so whenever you write a new post it will automatically get submitted.You can add all of them or just pick a few.

Reading Settings.

On this page you have to set up your front page, you can click your latest posts or make your first page a static. If you want your first page to be a static you will firstly need to create a page and then come back to the reading settings and use the drop down menu to select your page.Then you can fill in the rest of the details to your preference.

The discussion, media settings can be left as it is.

Privacy Settings.

For the privacy settings just make sure the first option is selected so you can get indexed by the search engines.

Permalink Settings.

Select custom structure and add

/%postname%.html

and the click on save changes.

The next step is to add the plugins that will help protect your blog from hackers and also help with the performance of your blog. Here is a list of important plugins that you can install.Go to the plugins page and click on add new and enter the name of the plugin, you can then select the plugin and install it on your blog. Some installations require you to set it up after installation. All you need to do is locate the plugin under settings and fill in the details.

You can start writing some posts, under your title there is a permalink url, to get better rankings in the search engines click on edit and only enter your keyword and then click ok. After writing your article scroll down to the bottom to the all in one seo pack an fill in the details there as well. For the title add your keyword then write a description and also add your keywords below that. Don’t forget to choose your categories and add your post tags located on the right side of the page and then click update.
